Game of Thrones (HBO): Season 2/Episode 9

2.9 Blackwater
The Lannisters prepare for Stannis’ impending attack of King’s Landing. Led by Davos, Stannis’ navy is met by just one ship from the opposing side. Leaking with wildfire, the lone ship is then shot with a flaming arrow, causing a massive explosion that envelops majority of the armada with green flame. But this does not deter them. As the remaining ships approach the dock, a siege by land ensues. Cersei takes insurance in the form of poison. She drowns herself in alcohol while waiting for the outcome of the battle. Joffrey marches with his troops, but chickens out when the main gate is just about to fall. He leaves a representative for the king to accompany his uncle before he retreats to his chambers. Left without a choice, Tyrion leads the battle and manages to boost army morale, but ends up being slashed in the face. As he loses consciousness, Tywin Lannister and Ser Loras Tyrell come to the rescue, forcing Stannis to back down and retreat for the time being. The Lannisters live another day.

There have been many shocking episodes since this show began, but this has got to be the most exciting yet because of the siege of King’s Landing. I think it is the first time that the episode is focused on just one setting, which really helped in building up the momentum necessary to keep you at the edge of your seat. Come to think of it, it seems there are less than five people in King’s Landing that you should care about and the rest could die, if you just base everything on their brash and cocky demeanor. But you still feel fear for Queen Bitch and Joffrey Bieber even if there are episodes where you would rather see their heads on a pike. This episode is just a reinforcement of what we already believe in. Joffrey Bieber is a poser diva, but you also see that he is just a kid after all, a really spoiled kid who needs a beating, but a kid nonetheless. Queen Bitch is also awesome in all her drunken stupor, being brutally honest about realities in life. That scene with her and Tommen at the throne room is just heartbreaking, but then Daddy Lannister saves the day! The Tyrells have switched sides!

“I much like my head. I don’t want to see it removed just yet.” –Tyrion Lannister
