Game of Thrones (HBO): Season 4/Episode 9

4.9 The Watchers on the Wall
Sam finds Gilly knocking at the gates of Castle Black after escaping a Wildling attack. He lets her in and hides her in a room before going back out to discover that the Wildlings have begun their siege of Castle Black. The brothers of the Night’s Watch defend the wall with all their might and resources, but everyone’s inexperience proves to be detrimental to their defense. The Wildlings have giants and mammoths aiding their cause. Most of the crows die protecting the wall, while their proud commanders who have always insulted and belittled them all fail to prove their worth on the battlefield. Jon Snow is now the de facto in charge. Ygritte finds him and aims to kill, but hesitates to shoot him in the end. Her reluctance claims her life as Olly (Brenock O’Connor), the boy whose parents she killed when they sacked a nearby town, shoots an arrow straight to her heart. Jon Snow decides to confront Mance Rayder after holding the fort, believing that they would no longer survive a second attack.

I find Grandpa Targaryen really amusing. You know how you sit eagerly and wait for your grandpa to tell you a story about his glory days. Anyway, shit, what a boring episode. I guess I should have taken a hint from the title, no? I was curious as to what was happening back at King’s Landing. The last scene in the previous episode was that of DPwaA and his crushed skull, for crying out loud. I want to know what happens next! But I am stuck watching this. 50 minutes of Wildlings and Crows killing each other, two groups I couldn’t care less about. I find Jon Snow annoying. I find Ygritte annoying. I find the two superiors of the Night’s Watch super annoying. The bald one had to lock himself in a room, and the old one was almost killed by Tormund. The funny thing is I was rooting for Tormund all along. The good guys who are not as annoying, well, most of them died. This episode is annoying AF. There is only one thing that I liked, though: that one continuous shot of Tormund and Sam running on the walls. That was a really good shot.

“We could spend all night trading tales of lost loves. Nothing makes the past a sweeter place to visit than the prospect of imminent death.” –Master Aemon
