Episodio 1: Narciso (Mentira)

Ernesto de la Mora (Arturo Ríos) celebra su cumpleaños con una fiesta planeada por su esposa Virginia (Verónica Castro) pero su amante Roberta (Claudette Maillé) ha preparado una sorpresa más escandalosa. La hija mayor, Paulina (Cecilia Suárez), se encarga de la reunión. Elena (Aislinn Derbez), la hermanita, viene de sorpresa con su comprometido afroamericano Dominique (Sawandi Wilson), el cual no les gusta ni a su mamá ni a su papá. El hijo único, Julián (Darío Yazbek Bernal), mantiene relaciones sexuales con su novia Lucía (Sheryl Rubio) y con Diego (Juan Pablo Medina), el asesor financiero de la familia. No pasa mucho tiempo hasta que se descubre el cuerpo de Roberta colgado del techo de la Casa de las Flores, la florería al lado de la mansión la cual ha sido el negocio principal de la familia durante mucho tiempo. Los hijos intentan esconder el cadáver y, en efecto, la verdad de su madre pero a la larga se entera la matriarca la neta y las cosas ya no serán más como antes.

Siempre me han encantado las obras de Manolo Caro pero no sé qué pensar de eso dada la relación de amor-odio que tienen los mexicanos con él. En cualquier caso no soy mexicano y por eso creo que estoy permitido de gozar de esta serie sin reservas. Lo que me llamó la atención de inmediato fue la manera de captar algunas escenas. Gracias a las pinturas murales vívidas en las paredes de la mansión, hay varias escenas que se ven como piezas conmovedoras de arte, bañadas en tonos llamativos. Varios temas de relevancia social son introducidos en seguida como el matrimonio interracial y la bisexualidad los cuales van a definir supuestamente algunas tramas principales de esta temporada. Los personajes no se tardan en mostrar su disfuncionalidad, con Paulina a la vanguardia con la cadencia peculiar de su manera de hablar. La llegada del Mariachi al final del episodio es un buen indicador que vamos a ver más locuras divertidas en los capítulos que vienen. ¿Qué más nos tienes reservado, Manolo Caro?

Episode 1: Narcissus (Lies)

Ernesto de la Mora (Arturo Ríos) celebrates his birthday with a party organized by his wife, Virginia (Verónica Castro), but his mistress Roberta (Claudette Maillé) has prepared a more scandalous surprise. Eldest daughter Paulina (Cecilia Suárez) puts herself in charge of the gathering. Elena (Aislinn Derbez), the little sister, comes home unannounced with his African-American fiancé Dominique (Sawandi Wilson), whom neither of her parents approves of. Only-son Julián (Darío Yazbek Bernal) maintains a sexual relationship with his girlfriend Lucía (Sheryl Rubio) and with Diego (Juan Pablo Medina), the family’s financial advisor. It doesn't take long before Roberta’s body is discovered hanging from the ceiling of The House of Flowers, the flower shop next to the mansion that has been the family’s main business for a long time now. They try to hide the body and, in effect, the truth from their mother, but the matriarch discovers the truth soon enough, and things will never be the same again.

I’ve always liked Manolo Caro’s body of work but I don’t know what to think of that given the love-hate relationship that Mexicans have with him. In any case, I’m not Mexican and so I think I am allowed to enjoy this series without reservations. What immediately grabbed my attention was the manner by which some of the scenes were filmed. Thanks to the vivid paintings on the walls of the mansion, there are several scenes that seem like moving art pieces, bathed in striking hues. Various themes of social relevance are introduced at once such as interracial marriage and bisexuality, which are going to supposedly define some main storylines for this season. The characters do not take long in displaying their dysfunctionality, with Paulina at the forefront with the peculiar cadence of her speech. The arrival of the Mariachi band at the end of the episode is a good indicator that we are going to witness more enjoyable absurdities in the coming episodes. What else do you have in store for us, Manolo Caro?
