The Umbrella Academy: Episode 2

2. Run Boy Run
Five explores time travel despite his father’s warning about the repercussions. He ends up in an apocalyptic future where he finds the dead bodies of Four, Three, Two, and One, who is clutching a prosthetic eye. Back at present, he pursues his lead with the help of Klaus and traces it back to Meritech Prosthetics. With a bit of theatrics and blackmail, they find out that based on its serial number, the eye hasn’t even been manufactured yet. Agents Hazel (Cameron Britton) and Cha-Cha (Mary J. Blige) chase Five but seem to have a case of mistaken identity based on their intel. Luther tracks Diego’s whereabouts to a boxing gym where he mops the floor in exchange for a small room. Allison deals with losing her child’s custody post-divorce. Phinneus Pogo (Adam Godley), Hargreeve’s intelligent chimpanzee assistant, cheers her up by showing her surveillance footage of them as children. She finds a clue about Luther’s hunch that their father was murdered. Vanya entertains a new music student called Leonard (John Magaro) who is into her.

I got a bit bored with the episode. Nevertheless, this is just episode 2 and they are still establishing relationships and subplots. Here is what’s clear so far: One is the papa’s boy; Two is still hanging on to their superhero past and wanting to relive the glory; Three has personal issues; Four seems to be just the comic relief at this point and I am sold on his brand of humor; Five is the only one linked to the main plot for now; Six is still dead but appearing thanks to Klaus; and Seven, well I don’t know what her storyline is to be honest. It appears as though she is distant from the rest, which we can blame on her upbringing, but could there be any other reasons for that? I still don’t see her relevance to the bigger scheme of things at this point. Hazel and Cha-Cha, are they also from the future? And why do they have a different idea of who Five is? Perhaps a more intriguing question is who they are working for. They do mention that they are hunting “one of their own”. I’m lost and so far loving it. Hoping for answers soon!

“A spatial jump is trivial when compared with the unknowns of time travel. One is like sliding along the ice, the other is akin to descending blindly into the depths of the freezing water and reappearing as an acorn.” –Reginald Hargreeves
