Folge 16: Ein unendlicher Kreis
Michael schreibt seinen Abschiedsbrief.
Episode 16: An Endless Cycle
June 20, 2019. Katharina and Ulrich throw a party for their 25th wedding anniversary and all of their friends are invited. Magnus, Martha, Bartosz, and Jonas ride their bicycles to the lake. When 2019 Jonas leaves to do something for his grandma, 2020 Jonas arrives from 1921 and does what his younger self cannot do. He kisses Martha and tells her that they are perfect together. In the evening almost everyone is at the Nielsens except: Peter, who spends time with a transvestite instead; and Michael, who meets Mikkel at his house for the first time. While everyone is having fun at the party, 2020 Jonas comes home to confront his father and convince him not to commit suicide. But Michael has neither intention nor clue about it. He finally narrates what happened on the night of Mikkel’s disappearance. 2020 Jonas himself led him to the tunnels. Grandma Claudia arrives out of the blue and tells them that what happened should happen, because Jonas’ role is more important than what he thinks. Michael writes his suicide letter.
Thank you, Dark. This episode gave me an “ultimate fistbump”. On the head. I have always wondered whether Michael ever met his younger self Mikkel and how that was. I have also wondered why he committed suicide. Now everything makes sense, but I never thought that it would be accomplished with two Jonases. Insane! Dark is the gift that keeps on giving. What catches me off-guard even more is how everything falls into place. In the end Jonas himself is the cause of his father’s suicide. It has confirmed my theory that Mikkel’s suicide is not really the beginning, but rather Jonas’ birth. If he wants to end all of it, then he should end it in that moment. I am no longer sure, unfortunately. Like in Adam’s monologue, “Where did everything begin?” We don’t know! It’s an issue that never fails to give me a headache. We also have the Bootstrap Paradox. Where did Mikkel’s suicide letter really originate? The time machine? H.G. Tannhaus’ book?
