Episode 32: Hyacinth (Jealousy)
1979. Viginia and Ernesto come to the New Year’s Eve party. There she speaks with Pato, who tells her about what he discovered regarding her dad’s murder. She couldn’t believe her mom to be capable of such atrocity. In her mind, her father abandoned them. Angry, she leaves the party with Ernesto. Drunk, Pato declares his love for Agustín. Since he’s in the closet, he reacts violently. He and his friends beat up Pato and leave him all bloodied on the pavement. At present, María José breaks up with Kim because she doesn’t agree with her methods regarding transgender rights. She helps Paulina find out what happened to Pato. Old man Agustín Corcuera (Jorge Levy) is dismissive and doesn’t want to help them. In the end, Paulina gets the answer from Ernesto himself, who tells her everything including the possibility of Pato being her real father. Elena and Julián team up to convince Diego’s parents to get him out of gay conversion therapy. Delia literally gives Victoria a taste of her own medicine.
Oh-my-god-why-did-they-kill-Pa-tri-cio? I have to admit that at first it leaves a bad taste in the mouth because it does not send a positive message to the gay community. However, what they are aiming for here is some kind of contrast between two different eras. The subplot that represents the modern homosexual struggle in this story is that of Diego’s. And so, if they kill Diego then that’d be quite fucked up. On the contrary he’s already out of therapy and it seems he will have a happy ending with Julián, which reinforces the argument that gay couples also deserve to have their own families. It’s tragic that Pato didn’t have the same chance, yet here we are with an uplifting message thanks to the present subplot. For now what I want to know is Victoria’s reason for killing her husband as well as why she’s doing the same thing to Elena. There has to be a good explanation for her behavior, right? Two episodes more and we’re done. I am expecting more answers.
