9. What If... The Watcher Broke His Oath?
To fix up his mess, the Watcher gathers a group of warriors from various universes and calls them the Guardians of the Multiverse: Captain Carter, Star-Lord T’Challa, Dark Doctor Strange, Killmonger Black Panther, Party Thor, Gamora, and Natasha Romanoff from the universe Ultron destroyed. Now, he is out to destroy the remaining ones. The Watcher hatches a plan for all of them to divert Ultron’s attention as they try to retrieve the Mind Stone and obliterate it with the rest via Gamora’s Infinity Stone Crusher. They do succeed after putting up a fight, but Ultron reveals that the Infinity Stones from different worlds are all unique and that his could not be eliminated. With the help of Captain Carter, Natasha uses Hawkeye’s computer virus-infected arrow to shoot Ultron with it in the head, resulting in Zola’s trojan program taking over the body. With both Zola and Killmonger wrestling for control over the Infinity Stones, Strange traps them in a pocket dimension as the guardians return to their own worlds.
I’ve always wondered if there will ever be a What If movie. It turns out, there won’t be, because THIS is it. Perhaps it is better off this way so as not to confuse us even further. Besides, imagine the logistics nightmare that would entail, not to mention contractual obligations that are no longer in effect. At least on Disney+ they only have to come up with the animation and find suitable voice actors. What’s confusing about the episode is who and where the heck did Gamora come from. Maybe she belongs to that 10th episode that has been pushed back to Season 2. If anything, this season finale will help boost anticipation for her episode slated for next season. Should you be asking, what happened to Episodes 3 and 5? We don’t get to see Spider-Man or Ant-Man’s head, but the Zombies were used to distract Ultron. As for Episode 3, I believe that is the world being conquered by Loki where the Watcher chose to return Natasha from Episode 8 instead. And so it ends. Let’s see what they have in store for Season 2. I hope it’d be just as badass.
