The Umbrella Academy: Episode 30

30. Oblivion
Viktor and Lila kill their guardian as Five, Ben, and Sloane also do theirs, but not without a fight. Klaus and Luther bond in the afterlife, the latter forcing the former to bring them both back to fight with their family. The two materialize at the Hotel Oblivion just in time after Five gets one of his arms chopped off and right before Sloane is about the be decapitated by the last remaining guardian. Ethereal Luther gets rid of the last guardian but disappears as Klaus is weakened. Five finds the signs on the floor where all of them, except Allison, stand in position as their life essence, the alien substance that gave them powers, are sucked as a power source by the universe reset machine at the hotel. Not wanting everyone to die, Allison fatally hits Reginald in the head but pushes the reset button anyway. She ends up with Ray and Claire at her LA home as part of her deal while the rest, sans Sloane but with Luther, emerge from an elevator in a Hargreeves Enterprises-dominated world where his wife Abigail is alive and the kids don’t have their powers anymore.

We get some answers and then a barrage of new questions. Is Allison dead? Is that her version of heaven or just an alternate reality Reginald placed her in? If not, is it the same universe? Does she still have her powers? Where is Sloane? If only the Umbrellas were reset, why is Ben still a dickhead? Did Papa Hargreeves know that Allison betraying her will reset the universe anyway, so he just let it happen? Why is Ben going to Yeouido? Why did Umbrella Ben’s ghost age anyway? In that episode with his funeral and where he first appears to Klaus as a ghost, he was younger and portrayed by a different actor. Having said that, why do the Umbrellas recognize grown-up Sparrow Ben when they NEVER saw Umbrella Ben at that age? Okay, enough questions. Now, an observation: The season finale seems more like a SERIES finale to me. They ended it in a way that should they not be renewed for another season the conclusion can stand on its own as a proper ending. For now, we wait again. Overall, S3 is good, but not as brilliant as the first two.
