1. Resurrection
Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) kills a CIA agent and is pursued by Talos (Ben Mendelsohn). Fatally shot, he is revealed to be a Skrull, giving Maria Hill (Cobie Smulders) a hint of a bigger Skrull infiltration happening on Earth. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is beamed down from his space station at her behest and is almost immediately abducted by Sonya Falsworth (Olivia Colman), his ex-ally who still works for the MI6 and is under the impression that her old friend is not fit to deal with the covert Skrull operation. Meanwhile, Talos comes face to face with his daughter G’iah (Emilia Clarke) a long time after the death of his wife, her mother. She now works with the Skrull rebellion under the leadership of Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir), helping them in their ploy to provoke a world war between Russia and the United States by kidnapping high-ranking officials, keeping them captive, and basically stealing their identities and memories. Hill is shot dead by Gravik pretending to be Fury as bombs are detonated at Moscow’s Red Square.
This espionage-flavored subgenre of the MCU has always had its distinct flavor, some sort of a more serious and sinister tone dashed with occasional humor here and there, which is noticeably absent in Secret Invasion’s pilot. In a way, it is a good departure from the MCU’s current style that is already hovering too close to slapstick comedy. With such a grim atmosphere, a sense of doom forms within you that fosters some doubts, upping the stakes. Given how they decided to unalive Maria Hill without warning, which I guess is just Smulder’s best route into MCU retirement after playing the character for a decade, it looks like this show will be slapping us unawares with surprises as it goes on. The biggest question for now is whether G’iah is, in the end, just G’iah. Given the Skrulls’ MO, though, could it be that the woman G’iah is pretending to be is more than just an MCU side character? A mutant perhaps? We can only speculate. For now, let the guessing games as to who have always been Skrulls in the MCU begin!
