Secret Invasion - Episode 2

2. Promises
1997. Talos and his Skrulls come back to Earth after failing to find a home, holding on to a promise made by Fury that he and Carol Danvers will search for one for them somewhere in the galaxy. At present, Maria Hill’s body is airlifted back to America while Fury is whisked away to safety by a disguised Talos. Talos admits he sent a code to a million of his kind to seek refuge on Earth and they are all here now, many of them securing various positions of power like NATO secretary general and UK prime minister. Gravik holds a meeting among them and stages a coup, being voted as Skrull General. The American caught with Fury and Hill at Red Square turns out to be a Skrull who is later tortured by Falsworth. G’iah finds out that Gravik and his team are in the midst of inventing a machine that will make them stronger, stumbling upon computer files that contain intel on Groot and Cull Obsidian, among others. After almost being apprehended by James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), Fury escapes and goes back home to his wife, a Skrull named Varra (Charlayne Woodard).

Nick Fury is married? To a Skrull? I guess that’s the benefit of seeing these characters for more than a decade now but with intentionally vague backstories. It makes room for many surprises down the line. Am I the only one amused by Sonya Falsworth? I mean, I don’t honestly believe that Olivia Colman can axe kick anyone to save her life but she makes her character more sinister via other means. It makes me want a prequel series of her and Nick Fury during their younger days, when I believe she could’ve axekicked anybody she wanted a la Black Widow. Given the 1995 and 1997 flashbacks, it should be safe to consider this show as a direct sequel to Captain Marvel. In fact, the storyline feels like a direct continuation of that film sans Captain Marvel because it is totally focused now on the Skrulls and their MCU fate. Anyway, I also want a full series about the beef between the Kree and the Skrulls because based on the statement of that one Skrull leader who defied Gravik, it looks like their kind has just been playing the victim card all this time.

“You're telling me there's a million Skrulls walking amongst us right now?” –Nick Fury
