Episode 3
Sakyo airlifts his business partner and the captive maiden, Hiei's sister, to his lair on Kubikukuri Island where he holds a fight club of Yokai for bored filthy rich people to bet on. He introduces him to the Toguro Brothers (Kenichi Takito & Go Ayano) who he promises will take care of his pursuers. Yusuke’s confrontation with Hiei ends in humiliation; the latter no longer exerting any effort to fight the former who is clearly inferior. As such, Botan takes him to Master Genkai (Meiko Kaji) to train, with Kuwabara inviting himself and tagging along. Kuwabara managing to unleash his spirit sword through sheer grit and determination inspires Yusuke to enhance his spirit gun before Genkai passes on her spirit wave orb to him. As the two leave after their training, the younger Toguro brother, an old ally of Genkai, comes over to finish her off. Keiko is abducted by the older Toguro, forcing Yusuke to team up with Hiei, Kurama, and Kuwabara as they are invited over to Sakyo’s island for unknown reasons.
You know the Yu Yu Hakusho you are watching is condensed AF when they introduce and get rid of Master Genkai in the same episode. At this point I have no clear idea as to what they are aiming for here but we can always hazard a guess. This whole Netflix live action Yu Yu Hakusho thing is probably going to be a one-off five-episode extended film of sorts. I wouldn’t be surprised if there wouldn’t be any season two, depending on where they decide to end this and how many storylines are collapsed into one another. I would have no problem with that if I were seeing this for the first time today. The issue would most likely not be with the casual viewer, but rather with us who have points of comparison growing up with the manga and the anime. In such a case, perhaps we should just be happy that we are even watching a live version at this point, no matter how compressed the storyline ends up. If not, we can always watch the anime which also happens to be on Netflix anyway.
“Yusuke, the spirit detective, retrieved the Rapacious Orb from Goki. Then upon learning Kuarama's wish, he gave up half of his life and succeeded in recovering the Mirror of Darkness. Hiei possesses the last dangerous object, the Conjuring Blade. On being tasked with retrieving this too, Yusuke infiltrated a certain mansion.”
